Flight Sergeant Gordon Alexander McMurchy
was born in Swift Current, Saskatchewan in 1925 and worked
as a shipping clerk before enlisting at Regina on the 15th
March 1943. He trained at 3 B&GS, graduating on the 23rd
of December 1943 and was commissioned in December 1944.
He was awarded the D.F.M. with the award
effective from the 8th September 1945 (London
Gazette dated 25.9.1945.Afro 1768/45 dated 23.11.1945)
"He has completed numerous
operations against the enemy, in the course of which he has
invariably displayed the utmost fortitude, courage and
devotion to duty".
Wing commander G.A.Tambling made the recommendation,
dated 15.4.1945 when Flight Sergeant McMurchy had completed
32 sorties(198 hours 30 minutes) 28.8.1944 to 15.3.1945.
"This NCO has completed 32 trips
over enemy territory including such heavily defended targets
as Dusseldorf,Duisburg(3) and Essen.Throughout his tour F/S
McMurchy has displayed great cooperation, coolness and
devotion to duty and has contributed in a large measure to
the success of his many operational flights. I consider that
his fine record of achievement and the splendid example he
has set to his crew at all times fully merits the award of
the DFM (non immediate)."
