| On the
morning of August 5, 1944,
Flying Officer James Harrison was piloting Halifax Mk. BIII
MZ828 coded BM-H when it took off from Skipton on Swale
to attack the V-1 site at St-Leu-d'Esserent.
During the return trip on final approach to land, one of the
aircraft's engines failed, the aircraft crashed in the
nearby village of Skipton Bridge.
F/O James Harrison and Sgt Dennis Whitbread
were killed in the crash. Tragically, a five year old boy,
Kenneth Battensby, was hit by debris from the crash was also
killed.
